FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST

One of the best foods of British kitchen is full English breakfast, a big portion of cooked breakfast which contains eggs (scrambled or fried), sweet beans, bacon, mushrooms, tomato, sausages, black pudding and hash browns. Of course with HP sauce and a cup English tea.

It’s tasty and fulfilling. After eating one portion of full English breakfast you can feel full almost until the dinner time. They serve it all day long and not only during the morning, so if you are not open minded for a heavy breakfast like this, you can try it during the lunch time also.

In UK, best places to try full English breakfast, are small cafes nicknamed "greasy spoon". They are not fancy, they might not be as good looking for your expectations or the best place you would choose for a breakfast but believe us, the yummiest English breakfast you gonna eat are not in London’s most famous cafes, in these modest “greasy spoons”.

When we were living in London, every few weeks, we were eating full English breakfast in our neighborhood at Workers Cafe in Upper Street no:172, if you are around Angel, Islington you can give them a chance.  Full English breakfast is definitely not for everyday’s breakfast of our Mediterranean bodies or to eat if it’s a hot day but when you are in UK even in summer you don’t hear this “hot” word, so go on.

                                 -----------------------------

HEADING TO SUN

Our three years stay in our little kingdom comes to an end and we are heading back to sun, turquoise blue Aegean and Mediterranean waters, fluffy street cats, variety of juicy and tasty fruits and vegetables, amazing smell of the bakeries, adventurous motorcycle rides and Mediterranean style slow living.

There is a long list of the things we won’t miss like rain, unbeatable British summers, health and safety craziness, tea with milk but we gonna miss our home, the pubs, antiques shops and markets, city foxes, first class football, film quality British dramas, the smell of the fireplaces in the middle of the city, Guinness, canal walks, small theatres, delicious Indian food, our friends in London and also in a very special little pub in Edinburgh.

But,
at the end,
the question still is:
What’s the meaning of Stoneheeeeeenge?

A ONE DAY ESCAPE TO FRANCE

Since we came to London, for our Paris travels we were using EuroStar trains but today finally we experienced Dover-Calais ferries for crossing the channel for a short trip. The London-Dover train (2 hours) + Dover-Calais ferry (1,5 hour) system worked very well for us and the weather also was very helpful for having a little “air de France”.

Calais surprised us with its empty streets on a sunny Saturday. The 80’s music broadcast from the loudspeakers at the empty but christmas decorated Place d’Armes was little bit twilight zonish. The 55 metres high Calais Lighthouse visit with the accompanied by the lighthouse guide was the best part of the day. Climbing 271 steps of this lighthouse built in 1848, definitely worth.

At the end of the day, on the way back, we were the only ferry passengers without carrying huge bags full of beer cans, etc. and it was interesting to observe the amount of daily trade circulation/activity of people between two ports.

NEW RIVER WALK

We are lucky to live near one of London’s most beautiful walking spots. With only a five minute walk, we find ourselves in Regent’s Canal and enjoy. But there is another little gem in our neighbour, the path here is not so long as Regent’s Canal, it takes only like half an hour to walk from one side to the other but is a little oasis in Islington. Even we have beautiful herons in this little canal. Few days ago we had a  little chat with this fellow in the last photo.

It’s not well known as Regent’s Canal but New River is opened in 1613 to supply drinking water to London and New River Walk is open to the public every day from 08.00 till dusk.

Happy 400th year New River!

EDINBURGH

In July, we made a little road trip and big part of this trip was in Scotland. It was our first time in Scotland. We loved the country, we loved the people, specially Edinburgh. We felt there at home. Even, we have been regular customer to a pub during nine days we stayed there and made new pub friends, talked with them about the life, the city, the museums, the jazz, the poetry (specially Robert Burns), sports and -even we were agreed to not to talk about politics while drinking alcohol- little bit politics. Yes, it was a very special pub and we keep it to ourselves.

When we were talking about a trip to Scotland we were expecting a rainy and cold weather even in summer and for being in such northern part of the island, we were ready to it. Buuut, during our stay there, Scotland lived most hot two weeks since last twenty years and it was heaven for us (not for Scottish friends).

We will share more photos and details of this beautiful city but as an opening, we can say that we fell in love with Edinburgh. Is one of these old, characterful, amazing cities with beautiful people and we hope to go back there again.

BIBURY IN COTSWOLDS

Cotswolds towns are one of our favorite destinations in UK. The second town we visited last week after Painswick, is Bibury which is a 600-700 persons populated little town.

The town’s most visited parts are Arlington Row and the riverside lined by beautiful stone cottages. Bibury is not a place to spend hours maybe but certainly worth to pop up even for a short walk to see these beautiful old cottages.

PAINSWICK IN COTSWOLDS

Last week on our way to Silverstone for Moto GP, we visited two beautiful Cotswolds towns. The first town we stopped is Painswick. We walked on the narrow streets of the town and took some photos. We looked for a nice place to drink something but it was little bit like a ghost town and most of the shops were closed.

Anyway we enjoyed our walk on the streets lined of Cotswolds stone houses. The sun was not shining on that part of the day, pitty for the photos but it was nice to visit another town of this beautiful part of our little kingdom.

MOTO GP 2013 SILVERSTONE

When we were in Turkey, we were riding in every possible occasion but since we came to London we are away from our bikes and our riding joy and we miss to be on the way again. Normally we are not very big fans of racing bikes or watching the races from tv but we definitely enjoy to watch the Moto GP on the track.

Last four days we were in Silverstone for British Grand Prix 2013 and we came back home with lots of beautiful photos and big smiles in our faces. We watched with big pleasure big boys leaning in the curves just in front of us, heard the amazing voice of the engines during three days.

Three Spanish riders Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa crossed the checkered flag first, second and third but we supported as always our number 46, Valentino “The Doctor” Rossi. Our Italian boy finished fourth the race but still number one in our hearths.

BRIXTON WINDMILL

London is a different city. Before moving here, for us, London was a European capital city and UK was a European country. But after living here, we saw that Brits are Brits and Britain is clearly different than European culture. London also is quite different than the other European metropolitans for lots of things.

There are pros and cons of this differences  but one of the good things is that you can find little countrylike escapes inside of the city, like walking along the canal or being next to a windmill in the middle of the city. Sitting in a old pub and feeling like you are in a inn in the countryside. (How many ins or inns we can put in a sentence?)

When we first saw this 15 m. windmill in Brixton last year, we felt like we had one of the surprise gifts that London was hiding behind.  Brixton Windmill was built in XIX. century and served as a windmill until 1934. Since then was restored few times and today, is open to the public for visits on special open days through the year.

LAKE DISTRICT: WINDERMERE

Lake District National Park in Cumbria is one of the most attractive touristic destinations of UK and was part of our little road trip we made few weeks ago. Because of being there only 2,5 days, our visit was concentrated around one of the most popular lakes, Windermere.

During our stay in Lake District, we visited little towns around Windermere, enjoyed three boat trips in the lake, made a gentile 4 mile walk along the lake from the Wray Castle to the Ferry House and enjoyed the incredible, beautiful sun. It was a total 2.5 day of well spent relaxing time. This time was more a touristic trip but for the next time we hope to rent a cottage in Western Lake District and enjoy the less crowded part of the national park.

THE GENERAL

Last Friday, our last night in Scotland, we went to Glasgow’s old City Hall, built in 1841, to watch two Buster Keaton silent films  accompanied by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on its UK Première.

First film was a Buster Keaton short comedy, One Week (1920) and the second one was a Keaton classic, The General (1926) inspired by American Civil War and the railways.

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by American Timothy Brock who is also the composer of the musics, was brilliant.  The harmony of the music with films was perfect. Watching two classics of silent cinema with such a great music was a big pleasure.

After the concert, finding a nice place with a working kitchen at 23.00 in Merchant City, Exchange Square and having a relax dinner with couple of glasses of wine was the last nice little touch of the evening.

Oh, sorry, the last little touch of the night was taking these photos in front of an old train photo in our hotel, Grand Central Hotel which is an old train station hotel dating back to 1883 and designed by Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson.

MORECAMBE

When we headed through the north two weeks ago, we were looking for a town to stop near our way to eat something. Then we saw Morecambe on the coast and remembred Hairy Bikers’ visit to Morecambe to see the production of potted shrimps.

Decision made and we choosed to taste Morecambe’s world wide famous potted shrimps. For being a Saturday, Baxters, the most famous producer’s place was closed. So we tasted Edmonson’s potted shrimps. Because of tasting for the first time in our lifes, we can not compare with others but it was tasty what we ate. It went so fast to our stomacs and we forget to take the photo of potted shrimps.

After the “let’s taste Britain’s flavours” activity, we walked on the promenade from one side to the other side of the town next to a sandy beach.

Conclusion: it was nice to taste the potted shrimps, Morecambe is a small coastal destination to spend maybe few hours but not one of our most preffered towns in UK.

SOLSTICE IN STONEHENGE

Yesterday was the longest day of the year and to celebrate the solstice, we headed to Stonehenge, to one of the most spectacular places where the celebrations take place.

We visited first time Stonehenge two years ago. The circle of 4 tones stones was under protection and visitors could only walk around the circle. But for the solstice, the circle was open the public and we had a chance to visit every part of this 5000 years old archeological site.

The site was open for the celebration from 7 pm Thursday evening untill 7 am Friday morning. Because of the weather conditions, Friday morning we couldn’t see a spectacular sunrise but it was very interesting to see people coming, different costumes, rituals, musics, dances from the evening until early morning.

We couldn’t see the sunrise but considered ourselves lucky when we heard  that it rained fourteen hours without break last year. We really enjoyed to be there but it was sad to see the damage caused by people in this 5000 years old archeological site in only twelve hours.

                                      ----------------------------------------------

Since three weeks we are very excited about what’s happening in Turkey. Last week, we couldn’t keep following more from the internet and tv and we went there for one week. We became more excited when we saw the good things happening there and we felt sorry about our died, injured people during the resistance for democracy, freedom and human rights. We came back few days ago but our hearts are still in Taksim.

A FABULOUS DOCUMENTARY: UP SERIES

Last two evenings and nights, we were in front of the tv watching during hours and hours 7 DVD’s of a fabulous documentary: Up Series. Even we are living since two years in UK, we never heard about this documentary until reading the post of Joanna Goddard about the last film of the series.

It was the first days of january when we saw the post and very impressed about the idea of the series and same day we bought the box of the six first films and the last one of the series, the 56 Up.

The documentary is about 14 British children from different cities and social circles. The director Michael Apted filmed the first one, Seven Up in 1964 when the children were seven years old and then they decided to keep filming them every seven years. During two evenings and night, we watched how this children growed up, where the life brought them, their happy and sad moments, they angers.

Even watching only the first black and white film where you can see the differences and their points of view, how they are expressing them selves was very, very impressive, but after watching the whole series and when it was the time to watch the last one, 56 Up which is released in 2012, we couldn’t wait to see where they are, how they are when they are 56.

We don’t want to talk more about them and ruin the magic of the documentary but we recommend indeed to everyone to watch this fabulous documentary. It’s just fabulous!

TIGERS PLAYING WITH SNOWMAN

There is snow in London and here is a fabulous video of snow. Tigers playing with snowman at Longleat Safari Park in UK by BBC News.
